The Indigenous Governance Program (IGP) is expanding our tribal governance education curriculum and will offer a new, 4-part Tribal Business Series (TBS) during our upcoming “January in Tucson 2018” (JIT 2018) flagship event.
The new TBS was carefully designed to provide Indigenous leaders, administrators, and program managers with innovative, tribal governance education that supports Native nation building via economic development. Each of the four TBS courses demonstrates how institutions of governance can help Native Nations grow sustainable tribal business enterprises, foster effective tribal program management, and promote tribal professional development.
As the first course in the 4-part series, “Native Economic Development” will examine some of Indian Country’s best practices regarding Indigenous nation-owned enterprises, entrepreneurship, procurement, Indigenous nation public finance, sovereignty, and the securitization of resources, among other topic areas. Our “Tribal Business Law” course will be taught by world-renowned tribal law scholar Matthew L.M. Fletcher, who will highlight the unique challenges facing tribal nations as they seek to legislate and regulate business activity within their communities.
Mark Selman and Chris Derikson from Simon Fraser University’s “Beedie School of Business” will rejoin our JIT faculty to co-teach the last two TBS courses: “Business Ethics and Indigenous Values” and “Creating Indigenous Entrepreneurs.” TBS participants will learn how Indigenous values and tribal ethics can inform prevailing business practices, and will explore the governance implications of starting and building a new business venture, including processes for discovering or creating opportunities and assembling or developing resources to deliver and capture the value of new tribal businesses.
Indigenous nations around the world are undergoing rapid, economic development changes, and the IGP is excited to offer our TBS to students and professionals alike. Individuals who enroll in the four-course TBS will automatically receive a $500 discount on course tuition.
